Led by CableLabs, cable technologists are now laying the groundwork for emerging coherent PON (C-PON) technologies with 100Gbps capabilities, which will enable operators to reclaim optical spectrum and break through potential bottlenecks as data demands grow and network deployment options expand. Specifically, they are crafting definitions and designs for 100G coherent point-to-point "aggregation nodes" and "coherent termination devices" that would support C-PON's vast bandwidth capacity.
