Understanding the RU to CEH Conversion
On April 1, 2026, SCTE replaced Recertification Units (RUs) with Continuing Education Hours (CEHs). Learn what changed, how existing RU credits were converted and what, if anything, you need to do.
What's Changing With Recertification
SCTE is simplifying the recertification process. Here’s what you need to know:
Continuing Education Hours (CEH) Replace Recertification Units (RU)
CEH uses a simple 1:1 ratio — one hour of training or professional development earns one CEH toward recertification. No conversions, no complicated formulas.
One Consistent Requirement Across All Certifications
All SCTE Professional and Specialist Certifications now require 36 CEH earned within a three-year period — replacing the required 12 RUs for most certifications, and 21 RUs for DVEP, DEP and IPEP.
Three Clear Categories for Earning Credit
Recertification credit now falls into three straightforward categories — Training, Conferences and Certifications — each with a specific credit value. This makes it easier to identify which professional development activities qualify and exactly how much credit each one earns.
Updated Recertification Window
The recertification window opens six months before your certification expires and closes on the expiration date itself — removing the previous 12-month post-expiration grace period.
How RUs Convert to CEHs
SCTE has consolidated approximately 15 legacy credit categories into three CEH categories. Because similar activities previously carried different RU values, conversions are not based on a single fixed ratio for each credit type. Your SCTE transcript was automatically updated on April 1, 2026 to reflect your new CEH balance using this standardized structure.
All converted credits were maintained or increased in value under the new system. Certain legacy activities, such as membership and committee participation, no longer qualify for credit going forward.

- Continue earning CEHs as usual. Going forward, all credits are recorded as CEHs. The process for uploading external documentation in the SCTE LMS is unchanged.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The conversion happened automatically on April 1, 2026. Your transcript was updated to reflect your new CEH balance — no forms, no requests needed.
In most cases, no. Conversion ratios were designed so that members generally retain the same or greater overall credit value. While some legacy activities no longer earn credit going forward, the transition was structured so members are unlikely to lose ground toward recertification.
RUs earned from activities that are no longer eligible — such as committee participation or general membership — were converted and applied to your balance prior to April 1.
Certified individuals with a certification end date between April 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026 may renew using the previous requirements until the earlier of 12 months after their certification expiration or July 30, 2026. This is the only pathway for membership and committee participation credits to be counted.
Going forward, these activities will not generate new CEHs.
Yes. Individuals with a certification end date between April 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026 may renew under the previous requirements until the earlier of 12 months after their certification expiration or July 30, 2026.
Visit the SCTE Recertification page for a complete overview of CEH categories, requirements, and the recertification process.
RU credits have been converted to CEH and are visible in the candidate’s SCTE Transcript. If you believe your balance is incorrect, please contact [email protected].
The CEH and RU systems use different measurement units and are not directly comparable. The updated framework reflects a modern approach to professional development aligned with current industry standards. At a requirement of 12 CEH per year, most actively engaged professionals will find the requirement achievable.
Because previous recertification guidelines included a 12-month grace period after expiration, certifications that expired between April 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026, are eligible for an extended renewal period. These certifications must be renewed within 12 months of the expiration date or by July 30, 2026, whichever comes first.
Individuals affected by this policy have been notified by email. Certifications within this window may be renewed using either the previous RU requirements or the updated CEH requirements.
