The Challenge

Free advertising supported/streaming television (FAST) channels and other streaming-based linear services are no longer emerging experiments; they’re becoming core distribution and monetization strategies across the media industry. But as channel lineups expand, so does operational complexity.

At the 2026 NAB Show panel discussion, “Expanding Streaming Channel Lineups While Growing Brand and Revenue,” industry leaders from broadcast, streaming, advertising and infrastructure companies reinforced a common reality: Scaling streaming successfully requires more than launching additional channels. Doing so requires interoperable workflows, accurate metadata, dynamic advertising capabilities and consistent viewer experiences across platforms.

The challenge is fragmentation. Broadcasters, FAST operators, distributors and streaming platforms often rely on disconnected systems and proprietary integrations that slow deployment, complicate monetization and create inconsistencies in scheduling, rights management and ad signaling. As panelists emphasized throughout the discussion, “hidden metadata is hidden revenue.” Metadata has become critical infrastructure powering discoverability, personalization, advertising value and operational efficiency.

At the same time, hybrid delivery models are accelerating. Live sports, regionalized content and ad-supported streaming are pushing broadcast and streaming ecosystems closer together, increasing the need for standardized coordination across workflows.

More importantly, SCTE 301 reduces friction. As the NAB discussion highlighted, future streaming growth will depend on standards-based interoperability — not proprietary silos.
