SCTE Exam Policies & Procedures

In order to earn an SCTE certification, candidates will need to pass an exam(s). If they do not pass the exam, they may re-take it. Candidates will incur the exam fee each time the exam is re-taken.

All SCTE Certification exams are taken online in the form of a 50 question, multiple-choice exam. To pass an exam, you must achieve a minimum score of 76 percent correct. The all exams have a time limit of two hours, except the DVEP and IPEP exams, which have a time limit of three hours.

Exam Proctors: All SCTE certification exams are administered by an SCTE-approved proctor. A proctor must be present throughout the exam.

SCTE Certification Code of Ethics: All certification candidates agree to uphold the SCTE Certification Code of Ethics.

Exam Materials: All SCTE certification examinations are "open book." Certification candidates are responsible for providing their own reference materials and scratch paper. Any reference materials may be used, including the Internet, texts, tables, papers and calculators. Reference materials may not be shared. All scratch paper will be collected at the end of the exam. Candidates will not be allowed to retain notes or information concerning examinations.

Any calculator device or app may be used provided that it does not cause a distraction to other examinees or require special facilities or physical arrangement of the examination site (i.e., external power).

Exam Candidate Identification: Candidates must bring a company or government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, with them to the exam location. The SCTE exam proctor will need to verify their identity.

Exam Content: Exams consist of 50 multiple-choice questions that are carefully designed and analyzed to properly determine the degree of comprehension of the prescribed curriculum for the respective field.

Exam Time Limits: Two hours per exam (three hours for DVEP and IPEP).  Once the time limit expires, the exam will be considered complete and will be processed and graded regardless of the number of questions answered.

Challenge a Question: Exam candidates can challenge a question they think is outdated, doesn’t fit the certification’s scope, or contains incorrect information. An exam question can be challenged by writing concerns in the exam’s challenge box for that question. Entering comments here will generate an e-mail to SCTE. All challenges must be made while the candidate is still logged in to the exam.

Exam Grading: All exams are graded pass or fail. Criteria for passing exams are established by the SCTE Certification Subcommittee and require a minimum score of 76 percent correct.

Exam Results: Exam results will only be released to the candidate, unless the candidate provides specific written permission for a wider distribution.

If a Candidate Fails an Exam: Candidates will be informed of the specific categories where they performed inadequately on the exam as soon as the exam is submitted. After failing an exam, candidates can re-take the exam at any time beginning the following day. A testing fee is assessed each time an exam is taken.

SCTE Certification Code of Ethics

All SCTE certification candidates agree to abide by the following code of ethics:
To uphold and advance the honor and dignity of the profession, and in keeping with high standards of ethical conduct, I acknowledge that:

  • I will be honest and impartial and will serve with devotion and integrity my employer, my clients and the public.
  • I will strive to increase the competence and prestige of the profession.
  • I will endeavor to aid the professional development of those in my employ or under my supervision.
  • I will be dignified and honest when presenting my work and will take care to credit others for their work.
  • I will act as a faithful agent for my employer or client and will disclose affiliations that influence my judgment.
  • I will earnestly endeavor to aid the work of the Society.
  • I will uphold and abide by the rules of the SCTE certification program.

Complaints: SCTE Certificants are granted certification by the SCTE and may hold themselves out to the public as such. In order to maintain and enhance the credibility of SCTE certifications, SCTE has adopted Administrative Procedures to allow SCTE members and others to bring complaints to the SCTE concerning the conduct of certification candidates, certificants and proctors. In the event of a violation of the Code of Ethics or of other substantive requirements of the certification process by an SCTE certification candidate, certificant or Proctor, the SCTE may take appropriate disciplinary action.

Complaints can be submitted to SCTE at certification@scte.org or faxed to the SCTE Certification Department at 610-363-5898.

The SCTE Exam Platform

All SCTE certification exams are administered online. To familiarize yourself with the exam platform, read about the features below or take a demo exam.

Starting the Exam - Once you purchase an exam and are ready to test, select your exam and the Proctor’s login screen appears. The SCTE exam proctor will log you in, and, at this point, the test has started. The time is displayed in the upper left hand corner of the screen, to keep you informed.

Navigation links - Every link has an explanation – simply move the mouse over the link and you’ll see what function it performs.

Question Numbers - You can navigate through the questions sequentially by using the left and right navigation keys at the bottom of the screen to go to the next or previous questions. You can also use your computer’s arrow keys.

Bookmark -
If you want to think about a question before finalizing your answer you can bookmark it. This link allows you to easily come back to that question before you submit your exam. (To review bookmarked questions, click on the "Review Exam" link).

User Notes -
This field on the right provides a place to jot your notes and thoughts as you ponder the question. The field is unique for each new question and the notes are discarded once the exam is submitted.

Challenge -
If you find a question that concerns you—for example, it appears that there may be two correct answers or the content appears outdated—you can challenge the question. Provide detail to describe your concern. Challenging the question sends an e-mail directly to SCTE, where your challenge can be evaluated.

Review Exam -
Once you are done, you can review your exam. The screen displays your bookmarked questions along with any you did not answer. If you’d like, you can select to see a list of all questions on the exam.

Submit -
Your exam is not complete until you submit it. Important: Once you submit, you cannot return to the exam. So take your time—within the two-hour limit (Three hours for DVEP and IPEP). When you click "Submit," you’ll receive a message prompt to confirm you really want to submit the exam. Make sure all your questions have been answered completely before submitting.

Using a Purchase Order to Pay for SCTE Certification Exams

A company can submit a Purchase Order (PO) to SCTE to be used for employees taking SCTE certification exams. After SCTE approves the PO (a credit check may be required), authorized company employees will enter the PO number as payment for their certification exams. Employees who are SCTE members as well as those who are non-members can use the same PO, and it can be used for any SCTE exam.

SCTE will invoice the company monthly for exams administered under the PO during the previous month. The company is responsible for providing the PO number to employees who are authorized to use it. All POs will be closed at the end of the SCTE fiscal year.

POs can be submitted to SCTE at certification@scte.org or faxed to the SCTE Certification Department at 610-363-5898.

SCTE Equal Opportunity

Equal opportunity will be provided to all certification candidates and exam proctors regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin, age, color, ancestry, mental or physical disability or handicap, veteran's status or any other classification protected by applicable law.

As defined by the Society (SCTE), certification is "the formal recognition by a cognizant peer group of the demonstrated accomplishment of proficiency with and the comprehension of the uniquely defined body of knowledge at a point in time." It is not a measure of competence.
